Toddler Activities to Enhance Learning and Development
A toddler is a bundle of energy and enthusiasm with an incessant curiosity about the world around him. One way that
a parent can channel that energy and satisfy some of the curiosity is to participate in toddler activities with her
child that will encourage interaction and development. These toddler activities can take place throughout the day,
both as part of your daily routine and to provide special “together” time for the two of you.
Toddler Activities in your Daily Routine
There are many ways to incorporate fun toddler activities into your daily schedule with your child. One of the most
important toddler activities that you can do together is to read books with your child. Reading to your child will
stimulate his imagination, encourage his listening skills and teach him to love books long before he begins to read
them to himself. One of the natural times in the daily routine to include a good book is before nap or bedtime. Not
only is it a great way for you and your child to spend quality time together, but your child will have the
opportunity for some quiet time that will settle him down for sleeping.
You can also find a time to take a walk together every day. While you are outdoors, you can talk to your child
about the different animals or plants that you encounter on your excursion, or simply watch the clouds move across
the sky. You can even help your tot to collect leaves and other nature items for arts and crafts time at home.
Spending this time with your little one will encourage his observation and verbal skills to develop, and give the
two of you the opportunity to learn to communicate effectively with each other.
Special Toddler Activities
Playing a game with your toddler is an activity that can be fun for both of you. Whether it is a board game or a
rousing game of hide-and-seek, your child will learn about taking turns and how to be a good sport. You can also
spend a rainy afternoon making Play-Do creations together or finger painting masterpieces to hang in your tot’s
room. Don’t be afraid to let your little one get a little messy – keep in mind that skin, clothes, and even floors
can be washed! The benefits for your child will far outweigh the need for cleanup afterwards.
Toddler activities are a great way for you and your child to spend fun, quality time together. Prepare yourself for
the next bout of boredom by creating a list of activities that your toddler would enjoy. The next time you have
trouble containing that bundle of energy, you can pull a toddler activity out of your bag of tricks to keep that
little one busy!
