Do Not Be Alarmed By Newborn Acne
Do not be alarmed if your baby has newborn acne. Newborn acne can be present at birth or appear anytime during the
first month. Newborn acne usually affects your baby’s cheeks, but it is possible for your baby to have pimples on
his or her chin or forehead. Along with pimples, your baby may also have whiteheads. You will probably notice that
your baby’s newborn acne is more noticeable when he or she is fussy or hot. This is due to increased blood flow in
your baby’s skin.
Newborn acne is thought to be caused by immature and clogged sebaceous glands. Many people also believe that
newborn acne is a result of the mother’s hormones passing through to the baby during the final moments of
pregnancy. Newborn acne does not cause any major problems for your baby. However, if it does not go away by six
months you may want to have your baby’s pediatrician check your baby’s skin. The doctor may prescribe a special
medication that you can apply to the affected areas.
Many new parents see newborn acne and think they are not cleaning their baby’s face adequately. You should know
that scrubbing your baby’s face over and over again can aggravate the problem. Newborn acne is not a reflection on
the cleanliness of your baby. Newborn acne will pass.
You should know that there are things which can make newborn acne worse. If your baby has newborn acne than he or
she has very sensitive skin. It is very important that you keep your baby’s mouth and face clean and dry. Drool and
spit up can irritate newborn acne and make it worse.
You should also know that some detergents can aggravate newborn acne. Holding your baby against your shoulder or
placing your baby on a blanket that has been washed in a harsh detergent can make the acne worse. You should use a
very mild detergent on clothing and blankets that your baby’s face will come in contact with. You should also make
sure all clothing and blankets are soft. Abrasive and stiff material can irritate newborn acne.
Monitor your baby’s body temperature. Bundling a baby too warmly can cause newborn acne to flare up. Being too hot
can make the acne more noticeable and it will look inflamed.
You should avoid applying creams, lotions and oils to your baby’s acne unless you have been instructed to do so by
a doctor. Creams, lotions and oils can make the acne worse. If your baby’s pediatrician does instruct you to apply
a cream, lotion or oil it will probably be one that is all natural.
If you are having your baby’s portrait made it is perfectly fine to apply a light concealer to your baby’s acne.
However, it should be washed from your baby’s face immediately after his or her picture is taken. Makeup and
concealers will only make the acne worse. It should not be applied to your baby’s face on a daily basis. Use make
up and concealers only for those special occasions – like picture taking.
The good news is that once your baby’s skin matures the acne will go away. Your child’s skin should be clear and
smooth until he or she enters adolescence. Adolescent acne is not as easy to deal with as newborn acne. So, do not
fret over your baby’s skin, now. You can save those worries for years down the road!
