Family Traditions Important for Busy Children
and Parents
While there are some families that have few or no traditions to
speak of, this is not necessarily a good thing. There are a
number of advantages to creating a family in which traditions
are important and have value. Especially when families are
busy, it is very important for the family to have some
traditions that they keep in their lives, if only to help keep
the family centered and focused on something that should be
important to them all – their own collective being.
Families that are unable or unwilling to share traditions lose
out on a number of different things, but the most important
being unity. Without common things to bond them together (ie –
traditions), families are less likely to form a united front.
They may feel that they have nothing in common or nothing to do
with each other, save the fact that biologically they were all
brought together. By establishing some traditions, be they
daily or yearly ones, families can help to bind themselves
together to each other in a way that is not only habit forming,
but also most likely important and significant to the family
and the individual members.
Routines are often ordinary, but traditions are more likely
more special and meaningful. It is important not to confuse the
two. Especially when family members may not be around due to
busy lives and schedules, it is important to have a sense of
tradition so that the family can gather and be together for a
certain event or period of time in a way that helps to remind
the family of who they are and where they come from, even when
they may not be reminded of that on a regular basis. Not only
these, but traditions often help family members to feel stable
or secure. This is especially important in families where the
members may not always feel so protected by the other
members.
Traditions can help to ignite that feeling of safety and
security, and it can be carried through even when the family
members are not together through reminders of the established
traditions. Traditions also help to ensure that there is no
entropy over time. In many cases, families that are new are
very committed to each other. However, over time, as the
individuals become busy and have less time together, the family
will more or less burn out or run out of energy. Traditions
help even the busiest of families to stay full of energy and
remain committed to each other. While in many cases the effects
of these traditions cannot be seen immediately, they are
nonetheless very important, and in some cases, vital to the
well being and sustenance of the family members.
Many times, traditions will only take place once in a while and
while the event itself may seem fun, some busy individuals will
not be able to see their true power and effect of the
traditions on the family as a whole. In cases like these, it is
important to slow down just a bit and remember where the
individual came from and who they are linked to. Again,
traditions can help with this feeling of unity and being
connected to others. Loneliness is one of the saddest feelings
in the world, but through families and traditions, it can help
to be fought off by many individuals that would otherwise
succumb to it. It is important to remember that traditions do
not need to be long and drawn out. Rather, they simply need to
be established so that the family and the individual members
come to recognize it and realize its importance – even when
lives get busy.
