Handling Sleep Deprivation. in the First Year with Baby
When you’ve got your baby at home for the first time, chances are good that you aren’t getting much sleep. There
really isn’t any way around this – babies don’t often sleep right through the night right away, and they aren’t
going to learn to do so for some time. It is also important that as a parent you are there to attend to your
child’s every need, that you are there to feed them, to comfort them, and to take care of them all of the time. So,
it’s a fact that you aren’t going to get very much sleep when you have a new baby. So, how can you help yourself to
survive the first year, knowing that you aren’t going to get much sleep? There are several things that you can do
to make sure that this happens.
The first thing that you can do is to remember you don’t have to do it on your own. If you have a partner who is
helping you to raise your baby, remember that it is okay to depend on them to share some of the sleep deprivation.
Make up a schedule so that one of you can get some decent sleep while the other one gets up, and then rotate to
make sure that each of you is having a chance at entering dream world. If you don’t have a partner, find some
friends or other people that you can rely on to take your baby once in a while so that you can get some good sleep.
Remember that one solid night of sleep here and there can make all the difference.
Another thing that you should remember is that you should try to sleep while your baby is sleeping. There are
certain things that probably aren’t going to get done while you have young children, so remember that these things
shouldn’t be as important as your sleep. If you get your baby to sleep during the day for a few hours, take that
time if you can and sleep as well. When you put your baby to sleep at night, remember that you should try to get to
sleep at that time too if at all possible. There are going to be lots of things that go undone while you are having
a young child, and so some of them should just be left undone while you catch up on your sleep.
Something else that is good to remember is that you should make conducive sleep areas for your child. This means
that your whole house should be sleep friendly. From the beginning, if you don’t want t your child to be a fussy
sleeper, try not to make them into one. Have them fall asleep in noisy places and remember that if you make your
child into a fussy sleeper, you are the one that is going to have to deal with that, and no one else.
The last thing that you should remember when you are trying to survive that first sleep – deprived year is to try
to get your family on a good schedule as soon as you can. Children are always going to sleep better if they are on
a schedule. This means that you should have bed times that you stick too, even with the youngest babies, from the
earliest point you can. Your baby should learn that there are times to be asleep and there are times that they
should be awake. This is a good way to help your baby train themselves to sleep all through the night, and the
sooner that this happens the sooner you’ll be able to do so as well.
