Recognizing Post Partum in New Moms

There are so many things that you are probably focusing on as a new parent regarding the baby at all times. Most likely you have a list of things in your mind that are important for you to remember – symptoms of illnesses to watch for, things you should never do, things that you should always remember to do no matter what – you might find that there are many things that you are doing each day to take care of the baby and you might not even think about the fact that there is a serious problem you should watch for in new moms – and that is post partum depression.

Post partum depression is depression found in new mothers. This is in no way a new concept; it has been around for a long time. However, in recent years it has become more and more obvious and apparent because of the seriousness of the cases that have happened where mothers have gone so far into sickness that they end up hurting their own children. This is something that is very dangerous and something that very well might happen. So, it is important for you to recognize the signs of post partum in new moms. If you can recognize these signs, you are going to be able to find help for the new mom or for yourself, and therefore you are going to find that it isn’t nearly so bad as you think it is.

First of all, watch for the general signs of depression. This includes sleeping too much or not being able to sleep, and a general feeling of sadness or irritability. These are general depression signs and should be noticed and have something done about them no matter what. You should always recognize that things like appetite loss, weight loss or weight gain can all be signs of depression, and if the woman has just had a baby, these are signs of post partum depression and something needs to be done about it.

There are other, more serous signs of post partum depression that indicate that something serious is going on. If you or your partner is showing these signs, you have to be sure to get help so that you can feel better and your children aren’t hurt. These signs might include a feeling of not wanting to be around the children. This is something that a lot of moms who have post partum end up feeling. Another, serious sign is the idea that the mom feels like their children are better off without them. This is a very serious sign, and it is one that can lead to major problems with the children. If a mom is talking about how her babies would be better off without her for a mother, it might mean that she might end up either hurting herself or hurting her children because she just can’t handle it anymore.

There are also signs that are obvious and should never be ignored. Any time a new mother has a psychotic episode, like hearing voices or having visions, there is a serious case of post partum going on and should be attended to right away. There are many things that can be done about post partum depression, but the biggest thing is simply allow the mother to have help and to have time for her hormones to get straightened out. If you think your partner might be suffering from this, the best thing that you can do is make sure she has support and help and that you get her any other help that she might need to have. Remember too, that in a mild case, often the mother is just overwhelmed, and you can do a lot of good simply by being there to take some of the burden away from her.
