Preparing Baby for Daycare
When it comes time to put your baby in daycare, whether you are planning to go back to work or you just want them
to start to socialize more, there are a few steps that you are going to want to take in order to ensure that you
sending baby to daycare is going to go as smoothly as possible, not only for baby but for you as well.
It Will be Hard
First and foremost, when you are preparing baby for daycare, you need to know upfront that it is going to be hard.
As a mother, you have a special bond with your child and so it can be hard to know that you are going to be leaving
them in the hands of someone else, especially if you have been caring for them pretty much on your own for this
whole time.
This is the main thing that makes preparing baby for daycare so hard, because you never know who you can trust and
you have the whole guilt thing going on.
Children will often cry for a few days or even weeks when they begin going to daycare, mainly because they do not
know these new people and they do not understand why their parent is leaving them there. Some will only cry for a
few minutes after they are dropped off, others will cry for quite some time, and some will be very adaptable and
not cry at all.
Remember that developmentally, young children have a very hard time with separation because they do not yet have a
sense of how time works and do not know the nature of families. In other words, they can only think about the
present moment and so when you leave them, they can’t imagine you coming back because they are not fully capable of
thinking about the future.
Ask Questions
One of the most important things you need to do when you are preparing baby for daycare is talk to them. You may
think that they are unable to understand you, but you would really be surprised. Also when preparing baby for
daycare, you should maybe try leaving them with a friend or family member first, here and there, someone that they
have met before.
This is important because it will help them see that even though you are leaving you will be back, but you will not
be leaving them with a stranger at first.
