Savvy Secrets Revealed to Get Through the Teething Stage
Babies seem to carry so many secrets and they will always keep you guessing. Even if you are an experienced mom or
dad, there is nothing worse than going through the whole teething stage with your baby. In fact, all babies are
different. Some may teeth with ease and some may cry and whine during the entire process. You may even find that
while your first child teethed very early at five months, your next child may well be late, at about 12 months.
There is no right or wrong when it comes to teething, but one thing is certain, if you have a fussy teether, there
are ways to help you and your baby get through this painful and trying stage in life.
You can expect your child to show his or her first signs of teething starting around five months old. Some start
earlier than that and some start much later. Teething at any age is perfectly normal. The first obvious sign of
teething is drooling. You may want to have a burp pad handy or put bibs on your child to catch all those drips.
Then, your child will begin experiencing red and bumpy gums. This can cause pain and you may find that your child
cries during this phase. Once the tooth breaks the surface, it will not be as painful. Also, remember that some
children have more pain than others. You need to understand what you can do to help your child ease that pain. Here
are some handy products that you can use:
Frozen washcloths: You can take a clean washcloth and get it wet. Squeeze it out and place it in a zipper
top sandwich bag. Place it in your freezer and allow it to freeze. When your child starts getting fussy from
teething pain, take one of these out and allow your child to chew on it until their heart’s delight. These are
safe, cheap and feel wonderful on aching gums.
Frozen fruit: If you have a child that is a bit older and is starting to eat solid foods, you can freeze
many fresh fruits and give them to you child to ease the pain. You will need to be very careful and supervise your
child for broken pieces. Small pieces of frozen bananas, peaches and strawberries are all great frozen.
Teething rings and toys: There are many toys that you can buy that your child will like chewing on during
teething. Your local baby supply store should carry a wide assortment of these toys. Some can be placed in the
freezer or refrigerator and others are just for chewing. This is a time when you need to be especially cautious
about what you allow your child to play with. Your child will want to put everything straight in the mouth, thus
increasing the choking hazard. Always supervise your child carefully when you give your child teething toys.
Teething biscuits: These are neat little biscuits or crackers that are thick and easy for your child to eat.
They have no sharp points that will hurt sore gums and babies really like the way they taste. They are quite messy,
so make sure you put your child in a highchair and a bib.
Medicine: There are several products that are available over the counter for teething pain. Teething gels
are very popular as well as a dose of Tylenol. When you use teething gels remember that it will numb your child’s
gums and lips, so use is sparingly and supervise. Your doctor can give you the right dosage of pain medication for
you child. Use these only when necessary.
