Picking Up a Crying Baby: Not Spoiling a Thing
There may be nothing more troubling to a parent than an infant that is constantly crying. Sometimes the littlest
thing seems to set the baby off. It could be a dirty diaper, an empty tummy or the baby’s way of telling you he or
she needs a little love. Crying can send any parent into crying fits, too. Here are some tips for dealing with that
crying baby.
Find out what the problem is: Of course, the first thing you will want to do when your baby is crying is to
find out what the problem is. Sometimes it may be very hard to determine the problem, but if you go through a
mental check list, you might be able to come up with a solution. When it comes to babies, the most common reasons
for crying are: a dirty or wet diaper, the baby is hungry, the baby needs to burp and the baby is hurting or is
sick. If you suspect your baby needs to burp, but is having trouble, one great tip is to use some gas medicine,
such as Mylecon. If you have gone through your mental check list and determined none of these things will help your
baby, then you need to start thinking about other things that can make your baby cry such as colic.
Picking up baby: When your baby is crying, your immediate reaction is to pick the baby up and comfort the
baby. There seems to be a lot of talk about when it is and is not appropriate to pick the baby up. Some experts
think that if you have already met the basic needs of your baby and he or she is still crying, then you should
ignore the crying and allow the baby to work out the problem on their own.
Other schools of thought say that you should always meet the demands of your
baby no matter what. These experts feel that you should never be separated from your baby and that anytime your
baby whines or whimpers, you should be there to comfort your baby. Any parent will tell you that both of these
approaches seem extreme and most parents will fall somewhere in the middle. The bottom line is that when it comes
to comforting a crying baby, most parents do well to use their own judgment. The only person that knows your baby
well is you, so you must determine whether or not picking up the baby is the right thing to do at the moment.
How to pick up a crying baby: When your baby is crying, you will want to pick up your baby carefully to
determine the problem. One thing you will want to do is to be careful not to startle your crying baby. This can
lead to even more crying than before. Before you pick up a baby that is in hysterics, talk gently and calmly to
your baby so he or she knows you are near. Then, gently touch your baby on the arm or leg to let your baby know
that you are about to pick him or her up. This can prevent startling and while it may not stop your baby from
crying, you can rest assured that you will not make the problem worse.
The next thing you will want to do when your baby is crying is to remain calm yourself. It may be hard to do so,
especially if your baby has been crying all day. However, you need to remember that if you are upset or tense when
you care for your baby, your infant will pick up on your feelings. This can make matters worse. Do the best that
you possibly can to remain calm even if you feel completely exasperated.
