How To Juggle Newborn Twins
If you are going to havenewborn twins it is normal to be concerned about how you are going to juggle two babies.
Caring and preparing for one child can be overwhelming. Knowing that you will have newborn twins can take your
breath away!
The key to being prepared for newborn twins is knowing you will have double of everything. This means double the
clothes, diapers, baby equipment, food, stress and love. Do not hesitate to ask for outside help. You may have a
wonderful support system around you that can help you. But, if you do not, do not hesitate to hire someone to come
in to help you with your newborn twins. This could be a home nurse, caregiver or a housekeeper!
One of the most important things you should come to terms with before you give birth to newborn twins is that you
will not be able to do everything like you did before. Your house may become cluttered, or downright dirty. You may
not get out of your pajamas for the first couple of weeks (or months!) and you may not have time to cook. All of
this is normal. Do not put pressure on yourself to be Wonder Woman or Super Mom. Enlist the help of your partner.
Having him do simple things like washing the dishes, running a load of laundry or taking turns with changing and
feedings can go far in helping you when you are overwhelmed caring for your newborn twins.
You should know that when it is time to take your newborn twins out, you will have to pack a diaper bag that
accommodates two babies. You should start adding these items to your wish list now. On a side note, you may prefer
to have two separate diaper bags or one large diaper bag. Regardless of which you prefer, here is a handy list of
what you should include in your diaper bag. Remember, this list should be doubled to accommodate both of your
newborn twins.
- Diapers for both babies
- Wipes for both babies
- Changing pads for both babies
- Diaper rash creams and ointments for both babies
- Plastic grocery store bags to place your newborn twins’ soiled or wet clothing
into
- Bottles and formula for both babies
- One or two changes of clothing for BOTH babies
- A change of clothing for Mom – just in case you get spit up or other bodily fluids on your
clothing.
- Blankets for both babies
- Pacifiers
- Any medication your baby’s need
- Suction bulbs for each baby, as well as saline nose drops and tissues
Many mothers of newborn twins that worked prior to giving birth are curious about maternity
leave. Unfortunately, having newborn twins will not allow you to take a longer maternity leave. Many mothers
of newborn twins are not ready to get back to work after three months. They do not feel they have regained
their emotional or physical energy. If you find yourself in that position, why not talk with your supervisor
or the person in charge of human resources at your job? You may find they are more than willing to give you
an extra month or two. They may even allow you to work from home or to work part-time, if you wish.
Keep in mind that every person is different. Some mothers of newborn twins can not ever see themselves returning
back to work. Others look forward to returning back to work. Whichever side of the fence you fall on is a personal
decision and it does not reflect negatively on your mothering capabilities.
