Fun and Creative Toddler Lesson Plans
If you are a new preschool teacher with a class full of inquisitive toddlers, perhaps one of the more daunting
tasks you will face is how to construct a good toddler lesson plan. Luckily, there are several ways that you can
make a toddler lesson plan one that truly benefits the toddlers you are teaching.
Toddler Lesson Plan Ideas
When a toddler is ready to start learning, there are several key behavior things that a parent or a preschool
teacher can look for. These things include an interest in learning how to walk, an interest in emulating how others
speak, and an interest in playing with toys like blocks.
Toddler lesson plans should teach toddlers several important skills. These skills include: relationship skills
(with the self, friends, and family), language skills that are both expressive and receptive, and motor skills.
Perhaps the most important thing that new preschool teachers should incorporate into any element of their toddler
lesson plans is play. It is a proven fact that children learn best through play, because playing is what they enjoy
to do.
At such as young age, toddlers do not yet play with others. Toddler lesson plans should allow for this, but also
gradually introduce to toddlers how to play with other children.
The “Music Walk” is a great way to teach children their colors through the popular game musical chairs. Take
colored pieces of paper (no more than 3 or 4 colors to start) and attach them to the seats of each child’s chair.
Play some music, and tell the children to stop on a color when the music stops.
Ask “Who is standing on purple?” If the children do not know, tell them the name of the child that is standing on
that color. Repeat this process over and over again, and little by little the children will start recognizing the
colors.
For more information as to how to find great toddler lesson plans, visit a local bookstore in the child development
section. Or, search the internet, as there are many sites that have been designed by preschool teachers in which
they share some of the lesson plans that worked especially well with their toddlers.
Remember, the most important quality that any preschool teacher must have is patience. Displaying patience shows
the toddlers that they too should display patience, and the more patience there is, the more children will learn
through various fun toddler lesson plan ideas.
